Mortal Kombat 3 Teased by Director: ‘It Never Really Stops’

Mortal Kombat 3 has received an exciting tease from director Simon McQuoid.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Mortal Kombat II is now playing in United States theaters. A sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat and an adaptation of the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, the new film is directed by McQuoid and stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and more.

What did Simon McQuoid say about Mortal Kombat 3?

During New York Comic-Con in October 2025, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema had given writer Jeremy Slater the green light to start working on Mortal Kombat III.

Now, McQuoid has shared some new comments about Mortal Kombat 3 with Entertainment Weekly; although, it should be noted that the interview was conducted before the release of Mortal Kombat II, meaning that McQuoid doesn’t go into any kind of spoilers regarding what the latest film in the franchise has in store for fans.

“We knew how we were ending this film [Mortal Kombat II],” McQuoid said. “You don’t want to be overly confident. I never want to be cocky about how anything’s going to land or play. You think about it, and you theorize it. So I guess I’m still in that mode where it hasn’t even come out yet. Ask me after May 8.”

More substantially, McQuoid also said, “There’s so much to draw from, and that’s both overwhelming and really exciting. There’s always a ‘What about that character?’ It never really stops.”

The synopsis for Mortal Kombat II reads, “From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II.  This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”

No release date information for Mortal Kombat 3 is available at this time.
