Shania Twain Movie Gets Big Update as Director Is Announced

Sony Pictures’ Shania Twain movie has finally found its director. The biopic will chronicle the life and career of the five-time Grammy Award-winning and renowned country pop star. Plot details are still kept under wraps at the moment.

Who is directing the Shania Twain movie?

Leah McKendrick has been confirmed as the writer and director for the Shania Twain movie, reports Deadline. The official title for the biopic is Shania.

Speaking of McKendrick, she’s an actor, screenwriter, director, and singer. As an actor, she’s appeared in movies such as Say Yes, All I Need, M.F.A., and Scrambled, which also saw her in the director’s role.

Scrambled was very well received by critics and moviegoers. It currently holds a solid Tomatometer score of 94% and a Popcornmeter score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. It initially received huge acclaim at the 2023 SXSW. Eventually, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions released the comedy theatrically in early 2024.

McKendrick’s next directorial effort arrives later this June. Titled Voicemails for Isabelle, the romantic comedy film will premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2026. It features Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson in lead roles. The rest of the cast includes Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage, Harry Shum Jr., Megan Danso, Gil Bellows, Toby Sandeman, and Spencer Lord.

It’s amazing for Kendrick to get the directing opportunity for the Shania Twain movie ahead of Voicemails for Isabelle’s debut. It seems her previous work as a pop singer and songwriter really came in handy in securing Sony’s upcoming biopic project.

Speaking more of the movie, it has Twain as the producer alongside Amie Karp. Notably, Sony has been on a recent streak of releasing musical biopics. In late 2022, it released Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody through Tri-Star. Sony will also release the upcoming series of four biopics, The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, by Sam Mendes.

As for the Shania Twain movie, it has yet to receive an official release date window.
