Keys’ road to music was never a straight line. Rather, it’s like a sprawling, deep-rooted tree. He grew up in the Bay Area, and he didn’t stick to any one genre. He soaked up everything from rock and blues to soul and funk. But his eclectic foundation wasn’t just about learning scales. It was also about learning how to listen.
His openness led him to his time with Parliament-Funkadelic and performing alongside legends such as Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins. There, Keys learned that music thrives in the cracks, particularly in the moments of improvisation where the song takes on a life of its own. In 2009, Keys took on a role that carried with it a massive legacy: keyboardist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He learned that filling the shoes of the late Billy Powell was no small feat. Here, Keys treats the studio as a blank canvas, an environment where he can experiment and help other artists translate their sound into finished records. For him, there is as much special magic in the quiet of the studio as in a sold-out show.
Looking to the future, Peter Keys isn’t slowing down anytime soon. He plans to keep carrying the torch for Skynyrd, but his heart is increasingly becoming rooted to the producer’s chair.
