Columbia House, Mail-Order Media Company, Is Shuttering

Columbia House, the mail-order music club that once boasted it would send you 12 albums for a penny, is alive in 2026 but not well.

The company’s website announced it is shutting down September 15th. While the days of 12 cassettes or CDs for one-cent, which eventually rose to $1 for 13 and other similar deals, to start a membership were long gone, Columbia House had remained open as an online catalog club for DVD and Blu-rays. But even that will soon go the way of the dodo. YouTube creator Channel 33 RPM gave a pretty good explainer of the company’s rise and fall. Watch it below.

Columbia House started out in 1955 as Columbia Record Club, an experiment by Columbia Records to capture a share of the record-buying public by getting them to pay a membership fee in exchange for being sent new records every month and having a choice of what’s sent. The experiment worked, and by 1996, Columbia House had 16 million members, according to a history by FundingUniverse. But its sales declined through the late 1990s and early 2000s as big box retailers and the internet grew, along with online piracy of music.

The company changed hands a few times around the turn of the millennium before being bought by its main competitor and the parent company of BMG Music Services, which also ended up selling the business. Bankruptcy in 2015 landed the company in the hands of new ownership, which utilized the business’ legacy to pivot into selling DVDs and Blu-rays. A 2015 plan to make Columbia House a vinyl delivery service never panned out.

R.I.P. Columbia House. That said, Consequence wrote the same thing in 2015. So, who knows what might happen.
