Netflix has handed a straight-to-series order to another major Western adaptation from the creative team behind its upcoming East of Eden series. Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart will write, executive-produce, and co-showrun the new project, which is their second collaboration with the streamer before their first has even reached audiences.

The creators behind East of Eden are bringing Lonesome Dove to Netflix

Netflix has secured the adaptation of Lonesome Dove in a competitive situation, partnering with Teton Ridge Entertainment, which controls the rights to Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The streamer moved fast to keep Kazan and Stuart in its fold, handing them another ambitious literary property while East of Eden, starring Florence Pugh, awaits its October 1 premiere.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, praised the pair’s work on East of Eden, citing “depth of character, the sweep of place, [and] the emotional precision” as reasons the streamer wanted to follow them to their next project.

Kazan and Stuart now face the challenge of adapting a novel that already inspired one of television’s most celebrated miniseries. The 1989 CBS production starred Robert Duvall as Gus McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call, earning 18 Emmy nominations and six wins. Those performances remain tied to McMurtry’s characters for many viewers.

The story follows former Texas Rangers Gus and Call on a final cattle drive from the Rio Grande to Montana, exploring friendship, mortality, and the fading mythology of the American frontier. A new adaptation aims to introduce the material to a generation that likely missed the original.

Kazan and Stuart said they are adapting the novel “with love and respect” and are eager to hit the trail with the characters. Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, and Jen Gorton executive produce for Teton Ridge Entertainment alongside Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana, and Curtis McMurtry.

Details about Lonesome Dove’s casting, director, or release date have not yet been announced. The central question now is who will step into roles that Duvall and Jones made iconic.
