House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal has cast doubt on a future return to the Game of Thrones franchise. The showrunner recently suggested that his work in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world may end once House of the Dragon concludes with its planned fourth season. The comments are likely to disappoint fans who hoped Condal would remain involved in future spin-offs.
Ryan Condal addresses potential Game of Thrones spin-off involvement after House of the Dragon
Ryan Condal does not appear to be planning another return to Game of Thrones franchise after House of the Dragon. Ahead of the HBO series’ third season, the co-creator addressed speculation about whether he could become involved in future Game of Thrones spin-offs once the prequel reaches its conclusion.
Speaking to Deadline, Condal suggested that House of the Dragon may be his final project within the franchise. “Anything is possible but I think I have said what I have to say about Westeros,” he said. As of now, he remains focused on completing House of the Dragon, which is expected to end with its fourth season.
The co-creator revealed that work on the final season is already underway despite Season 3 not having premiered yet. “I’m an ‘all good things come to an end’ type person. I don’t know what I will feel yet [when it finishes] because right now the show is almost like a snake eating its tail, very rarely are you doing one thing. Right now, we’re crafting Season 4 before we’ve even finished Season 3 and released it to the world,” Condal explained.
While his future involvement in the Game of Thrones franchise remains uncertain, Condal recently extended his overall deal with HBO through 2029. The agreement ensures that he will continue developing projects for the network after House of the Dragon concludes.
Reflecting on the new deal, Condal said it was done “to kind of establish the beginning of the next chapter, whatever that happens to be.” House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21.
