Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3 Exposes New Cracks in the Bowdens’ Fragile Facade

Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3 Exposes New Cracks in the Bowdens’ Fragile Facade

    Critic’s Rating: 4.75 / 5.0

    4.75

My biggest concern with Cape Fear initially was that the unrelenting feeling of dread wouldn’t dissipate enough to make the show enjoyable.

Thankfully, the intensity wasn’t as thick on Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3, allowing storylines to breathe and make a considerably bigger impact.

Let’s dive in by starting with Anna. I mean, what else can I say about her apart from that she’s one of the fiercest characters I’ve ever watched on television?

Amy Adams is a seasoned actor who picks her roles very wisely. Seriously, we never get her on TV, so I know that whatever she appears in is going to be good.

I thoroughly enjoyed how she went into Mama bear mode to unmask Nevaeh.

I didn’t expect to learn the truth about who Zack was disappearing with in the dead of night so soon, but with Amy on the case, nothing stays hidden for too long.

I don’t agree with the measures she took because Zack won’t trust her again, possibly ever.

But as a parent, you need to make decisions where you think the ends justify the means, and considering Zack returned home full of drugs, sans a toe, I can’t fault her actions.

Nevaeh was terrifying in the restaurant. Whatever’s gotten her to this point in her life, it’s clearly not been an easy journey.

Sadly for her, she had no clue who she was about to go up against in Anna. There’s no stone Anna would leave unturned in the name of saving her family.

Anna Meets Her Match on Cape Fear

Nevaeh went from looking angry about the situation to being pretty ambivalent, which led me to believe that she’d show up sooner or later.

Since she showed up at a party hosted by the local students, she must have some form of connection to the school.

Then again, what if Zack had invited her to the party before she blocked him, and she thought going would help her get close to him again?

The way she was chatting away with Natalie reeks of an agenda. Anna told her to stay away from Zack, or she’d have her tried as an adult for giving him drugs.

Anna didn’t tell her to stay away from Natalie, and since Anna’s relationship with her daughter is strained, Nevaeh seems poised to use Anna’s words against her.

But that doesn’t mean Anna’s going to roll over and take the blatant disrespect from someone she thought she’d never see again.

For now, I’m cautiously optimistic about how Nevaeh will upend everything. Plus, having Malia Pyles on the show is a positive in my book: She was one of the best parts of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

Let’s get back to Anna because, damn, there’s still so much to say about her storyline.

One thing that’s clear as day is that she holds guilt for whatever she did to Max. But could she make it any more obvious that she has something to hide?

Wherever Max is, she’s immediately spiraling and wondering if he’s doing something to her family.

    (Courtesy of Apple TV)

I’ve been wondering how someone who’s so well put together and calculated in their actions sees every situation with Max as fight-or-flight, so that little nugget about her father being the same added depth to Anna as a character.

One thing I absolutely loved about Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3 was the legal steamroll led by Anna at the hearing.

Despite her thoughts about Max, her legal prowess came out to play, and there was no shutting it down.

The men on the other side of the table thought they could shush her and speak to Max, and it was fascinating to watch her annihilate them with her words.

Telling them about Tabitha and the “documentary crew” waiting downstairs and urging them to smile for the camera on the way out was a sheer power play.

It paid dividends when you think about how she managed to get Max four times the initial offer.

Max Needs Vengeance to Move On

Max was right in his sentiment that, after his legal fees, he’s walking away with far less, and I don’t think he was that far off the mark in his sentiment that Anna’s salary is probably higher.

There’s an underlying resentment in Max’s words because he knows very well that the reason his case concluded the way it did was due to Anna’s relationship with Tom.

He must legitimately question how his life would have panned out had Amy not had that bond with Tom.

While the Cape Fear series premiere seemed intent on making Max out to be this hardened criminal, the series is doing a fantastic job of showing that he’s so much more than that.

Much like Anna — and everyone else in life — he’s shaped by his past.

Look at the way he was immediately thrown back to his past when the mysterious woman with the dog collar appeared on-screen.

It was unsettling to watch, but Javier Bardem sold it and then some. The acting on Cape Fear really is something else.

I’m unsure where Cape Fear Season 1 goes for Max. I suspect he’ll believe this woman to be a figment of his imagination, but Anna witnessed her at the door.

Maybe he’ll tell her about his visions, and she’ll wind up on a journey to finding out the truth about who he really is.

As for Tom, I wish I could say I was surprised that he invited Lexi over and then she almost spent the night.

It was evident from the jump that there’s more than a working relationship between these two, and I don’t believe that kiss was their first rodeo together.

They’ve worked together for what seems to be a long time, and I don’t think that pittance of alcohol would have lowered their inhibitions much.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some form of revelation that Anna knows about them, and there’s an arrangement in place.

You could tell Tom was pissed about his wife returning because he wanted Lexi to keep him company instead.

    (Courtesy of Apple TV)

We should get more of an answer when Zack inevitably uses Lexi being over as ammunition against his dad. They’re totally the type of family to do that.

What are your thoughts on Anna’s road trip with Max? Do you think that there’s far more going on than meets the eye?

What’s your take on that strange woman pursuing Max? What does that history look like?
