New J.J. Abrams Horror Movie Reunites Brie Larson With Kong: Skull Island Star

Brie Larson reunites with her Kong: Skull Island co-star in a Sony Pictures horror thriller. The upcoming film marks their first film together since the 2017 Jordan Vogt-Roberts-helmed movie

Who is joining Brie Larson in Skeletons?

John Goodman (The Big Lebowski) will star alongside Brie Larson in the horror flick Skeletons. The JT Mollner (Strange Darling) directorial is written by Brian Duffield (Whalefall) and is based on Philip Fracassi’s short story Fail-Safe. Alongside Larson and Goodman, the film will also star Kyle Gallner (Smallville), Willa Fitzgerald (MTV’s Scream), Ione Skye (Say Anything…), and Daithí Ó Haragáin. Skeletons will mark Larson’s and Goodman’s third film as co-stars. It comes after The Gambler (2014) and Kong: Skull Island.

J.J. Abrams came on board to produce a film adaptation of the Fracassi short story in 2020, following which Universal Pictures signed a two-year option to produce and distribute the film in 2022. However, the project was eventually dropped. In May 2025, it was announced that JT Mollner would be taking over direction duties, with Brie Larson starring. Sony Pictures acquired the worldwide rights to the project for over $25 million at the European Market in February 2026, beating Warner Bros. Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Neon. Principal photography began on June 22, 2026.

Per Deadline, Skeletons is “a modern take on creature horror movies told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.” The film is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, Infrared, and Assemble Media. Drew Simon, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller will produce with Abrams, while Assemble’s Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Larson, Fracassi, and Duffield are attached to the project as executive producers.

A release date for Skeletons has yet to be announced.
