Narnia Release Date Delayed, Netflix & Greta Gerwig Movie Gets Major Update

Greta Gerwig‘s upcoming Narnia movie has seen its release date delayed, but for good reason, with a major update coming alongside the Netflix movie.

When is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie releasing now?

Netflix announced that Gerwig’s upcoming movie, titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is now set to release on February 12, 2027, instead of its previous date of Thanksgiving. However, the shift comes with huge news, as Netflix also announced that the movie is getting a full, wide theatrical release window alongside it.

This marks the first time the streamer has committed to a full, wide release for one of its movies (second if you count the KPop Demon Hunters Singalong release). Unlike past releases, this is a legitimate theatrical release, with the movie not releasing on Netflix until April 2, 2027, almost 50 days after its played in theaters.

A report from Deadline notes that Gerwig has “always wanted” a theatrical release for the movie, and it seems like Netflix has agreed its time to enter the world of theatrical release. It’s unclear if this means more Netflix movies will release in theaters like this, but CEO Ted Sarandos has said for months now he was genuine about getting more of his movies into theaters.

As for why the movie was delayed, Deadline reports that a member of the film’s cast was injured, and thus production halted for six weeks. As a result, the film wouldn’t have hit its original release date of Thanksgiving in 2026, and moved back a few months.

The upcoming movie is based on the 1955 novel of the same name by C.S. Lewis, which is the sixth of seven novels published in the larger The Chronicles of Narnia story. The book acts as a prequel to the main series, and focuses largely on the creation of the world of Narnia, among other things.

“Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis’s beloved story The Magician’s Nephew to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew features a star-studded cast, which includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Denise Gough, Susan Wokomna, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. The movie will also feature an original score by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked with Gerwig on Barbie.
