Brand New Day Is Borrowing the Best Part of Insomniac’s Spider-Man Games

The much-awaited Spider-Man: Brand New Day has drawn inspiration from several past Spider-Man IPs, including the fan-favorite Insomniac video games, according to director Destin Daniel Cretton. In a recent interview, the 47-year-old filmmaker confirmed that his team has integrated a crucial element of the three-game series in his upcoming Spider-Man movie.

Destin Daniel Cretton reveals how Insomniac’s Spider-Man games influenced Brand New Day

While speaking with Polygon, Cretton noted that his stunt department extensively studied the Insomniac Spider-Man games to design several combat sequences for Brand New Day.

“I am not a gamer, but I’ve played the game, but I surrounded myself with people who were obsessive gamers,” he stated.

“So a lot of the people in our stunt department loved playing those video games. So they would do screen grabs of their play, bring it in, and say, like, ‘Can we pull this move off?’ So that was a great inspiration for things,” he added

Released in 2018, the first Insomniac Spider-Man game garnered much acclaim from gamers and critics, particularly for its layered storyline and realistic movement and combat mechanics. The game’s success warranted the release of a stand-alone spin-off in 2020, titled Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, along with a direct sequel in 2023.

When asked if Sony’s Spider-Verse universe movies had a similar impact on Brand New Day, Cretton replied, “I love those movies, and I love Chris and Phil. We definitely looked at those movies. We also drew inspiration from the video games; We drew inspiration from all the other Spider-Man movies.”

He further added, “There wasn’t a place where we weren’t at least trying to find, you know, references of things that we could do in our movie that you haven’t really seen before in live action.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026.
