DeWanda Wise’s Overlooked 2024 Horror Movie Hits Hulu Today

DeWanda Wise’s 2024 supernatural horror film has officially arrived on Hulu. Subscribers and horror fans can stream the PG-13 Blumhouse feature starting August 4, 2026.

Directed by Jeff Wadlow, Imaginary first debuted in theaters on March 8, 2024. Upon its theatrical release, the film struggled to impress critics and audiences alike, landing a 25% Tomatometer score alongside a 52% Popcornmeter audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the cold reception, the movie exceeded its production budget, earning around $43.7 million in total against an estimated $13 million production budget.

This movie stars Wise as the lead, who also serves as an executive producer. The ensemble includes Taegen Burns, Tom Payne, Pyper Braun, Betty Buckley, and Veronica Falcón. Wadlow also wrote the story with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. The director-writer also produced the project alongside Blumhouse chief Jason Blum.

What to expect from Imaginary when it hits Hulu?

The 104-minute movie follows a woman who returns to her childhood home to discover that the imaginary friend she left behind is very real and unhappy that she abandoned him.

The official synopsis reads, “When Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.”

Blumhouse Productions is best known for its horror movies, which include Paranormal Activity, Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Purge, Get Out, Happy Death Day, and M3GAN, the latter of which can be compared to the horror elements Imaginary brings. Viewers can expect a story that twists innocent childhood memories into a dark, escalating nightmare.

The Imaginary Hulu premiere gives supernatural horror fans another chance to enjoy the eerie story once again.
