She reflected on the experience during a recent interview with Josh Horowitz.
Anne Hathaway prepared for Harley Quinn audition, then found out it was Catwoman
Speaking about her casting in The Dark Knight Rises during a recent conversation with Josh Horowitz, Anne Hathaway opened up about how she had spent days preparing to play Harley Quinn, before learning midway through the meeting that the role was actually Catwoman.
Hathaway recalled that she knew she was meeting Nolan for the lead female role in the next Batman film, but she had convinced herself Catwoman was not an option. She explained, “So I knew I was meeting with Chris for the female role in the Batman trilogy, the next installment. And I like thought that I’d gamed it out because I was just like, ‘It can’t be Catwoman because Michelle Pfeiffer was so iconic. It’s going to be Harley Quinn.’”
The actress even arrived dressed accordingly, recalling, “So, I spent a week like developing like demonic Harley Quinn energy. And I was like wearing like weird jester flats and a striped top.”
According to Hathaway, the conversation took an unexpected turn when Nolan revealed which character she was actually being considered for. She said, “And then about like 2 hours into our conversation, Chris is like, ‘So, uh, the part’s Catwoman.’”
The actress said she then immediately adjusted her performance accordingly, emphasising the speed with which she did it by jokingly saying she was “like a psychopath.” Hathaway ultimately secured the role of Catwoman, starring opposite Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises.
